This is quite unheard of in the field of string quartet music : nearly all of Shostakovich’s fifteen quartets have, some way or another, been transcribed – by other musicians – for larger forces that range from string ensemble to full orchestra. Rudolf Barshai, who enjoyed a professional association with the Shostakovitch which lasted through to the latter’s death, recast five quartets : the First, Third, Fourth, Eighth and Tenth, thus adding a welcome new corpus to the composer’s orchestral repertoire. The Third is rewritten for a chamber orchestra with strings and woodwinds, the Tenth for string orchestra. This lively and highly energetic as well as emotional recording is conducted by cellist-turned-conductor Dimitri Yablonsky and the Kiev Virtuosi he is the music director of. The three other quartets as transcribed by Barshai, and conducted by Yablonsky, are available here. © SM/Qobuz
