Dietro il criptico moniker R+R=Now si cela un collettivo lanciato nel 2018 da Robert Glasper, che annovera Terrace Martin, Christian Scott, Derrick Hodge, Taylor McFerrin e Justin Tyson. Un cast di virtuosi della scena jazz attuale e dalla mentalità aperta, propria di una generazione che è cresciuta con mille influenze. Ma R+R=NOW è anche un concetto. Una filosofia che Glasper definisce spiegando il significato delle due R: Reflect e Respond. L’idea gli sarebbe venuta dopo aver visto Nina Simone reagire quando alcuni detrattori la rimproverarono per il suo impegno politico. Alcuni le urlarono contro “Taci e suona”. La sua risposta fu tanto semplice quanto tagliente: “Il dovere di un artista, per quanto mi riguarda, è quello di riflettere la sua epoca.”
Dopo Collagically Speaking, immortalato in studio nel 2018, il collettivo R+R=Now ha pubblicato un album Live, registrato nell’ottobre dello stesso anno al club Blue Note di New York, dove il sestetto ha suonato diverse settimane di seguito. Un’opera che, giustappunto, documenta la sua epoca, mescolando neo-soul, funk futurista, West Coast jazz, electro, hip-hop strumentale e musica d’avanguardia. Una miriade di improvvisazioni e ibridi musicali, nello spirito dell’Herbie Hancock degli anni ’70, potenziato dall’effetto dell’essere messi a nudo su di un palcoscenico. Ascoltare questi ricchi scambi e le improvvisazioni allucinate senza gli artifici dello studio è sempre interessante, oltre che un momento assolutamente godibile.
