Leurs noms sont intimement liés à l’histoire du rock, du folk, du metal et du blues. Frank Zappa, pour le meilleur et pour le rire

Plus les années passent depuis la disparition de Frank Zappa le 4 décembre 1993, plus son absence se fait cruellement sentir dans le panorama musical actuel. Non pas qu'on l'ait oublié, mais on cherchera en vain ceux qui peuvent prétendre l’égaler. Le génie aussi cosmique que comique de Frank Zappa n'a aucun équivalent aujourd'hui, car personne, depuis près de trois décennies, n’a été capable comme lui de conjuguer la plus grande exigence musicale avec un humour totalement décomplexé.

Zappa et le public

L'erreur majeure serait de penser que, vu sa richesse et sa complexité, la musique de Frank Zappa ne peut toucher aujourd'hui qu'une élite. Sans se laisser aller à la moindre complaisance, il était prêt à s'exprimer devant le public le plus large et on ne pourra que regretter qu'il n'ait jamais bénéficié d'un support médiatique à la mesure de son talent. Lorsqu'on l'invitait sur les plateaux de télévision, sachant qu'il était ce qu'on peut appeler un bon client vu son don de répartie, c'était le plus souvent pour lui demander pourquoi il avait appelé ses enfants Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmett et Diva…"À une émission où le présentateur (Joe Pyne) était un ancien combattant qui avait perdu une jambe, relate Manu Eveno, le type avait commencé en lui disant : "Monsieur avec ces cheveux longs, vous devez être une fille". Zappa a répondu immédiatement : "Et vous avec votre jambe de bois, vous devez être une table". Il donnait des leçons de sophisme en direct."

Comme le jure Dweezil Zappa : "Si l'on avait autant diffusé sa musique que celle de Michael Jackson ne serait-ce qu'en 1982, je crois qu'il aurait cartonné autant, si ce n'est plus (rire). Ça aurait changé la face du monde ! Tout ce qu'il a fait n'était pas forcément comparable à d'obscures expériences scientifiques. Il était parfaitement capable de composer des morceaux plus faciles d'accès, plus "grand public". Mais il avait aussi tendance à proposer des combinaisons surprenantes. Pour beaucoup de gens, cela fait probablement trop d'informations à capter en même temps…"

Selon l'adage "qui aime bien châtie bien", Frank Zappa se montrait souvent provocateur, voire féroce, envers son public. Certaines de ses victimes de ses fameuses "audience participations", durant lesquelles il faisait monter des spectateurs sur scène, doivent encore s'en souvenir… "Ce que le public respectait particulièrement chez Frank, soutient Dweezil, c'est qu'il ne se contentait pas de jouer pour les gens, il jouait toujours avec eux. La nuance est énorme. Le plaisir est bien plus grand lorsque l'on n'est pas seulement un spectateur, mais qu'on a le sentiment d'être complètement impliqué dans le spectacle. La façon dont Frank dirigeait chaque concert était surtout très fun. J'ai adoré tous ceux auxquels j'ai eu la chance d'assister. J'aurais aimé être plus vieux pour tout voir depuis le début. Sa manière de faire participer le public était hilarante."
