On aurait pu imaginer un album de plus. Pro’ mais sans surprise. Efficace mais pas renversant. Sauf qu’avec WALLS (acronyme de We Are Like Love Songs), les Kings Of Leon ont préféré opter pour la remise en question. Après avoir travaillé durant de nombreuses années avec Angelo Petraglia, le gang des frères Followill a demandé à Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Florence + The Machine, Mumford and Sons) de produire sa cuvée 2016. Un changement notable pour ce septième album, le bassiste Jared Followill racontant que, pour la première fois, quelqu’un osait leur dire des choses comme « je n’aime pas cette chanson », « ça, c’est mauvais » ou bien « là, vous pouvez faire bien mieux » ! Dravs aurait parfois même exigé que les Kings Of Leon réécrivent certaines paroles ou changent carrément le style d’une chanson. « Il nous disait : « OK maintenant rejouez ce titre mais comme si vous étiez les Sex Pistols ! » Et on se retrouvait à interpréter une ballade en version speed ! », raconte encore Followill… Au bout du compte, WALLS est sans doute l’album le plus ouvert et riche du groupe de Nashville. Les hymnes de stade côtoient les compositions plus introspectives. Et même les sonorités de guitares, comme les rythmiques, changent au fil des titres. Avec cet album, Kings Of Leon n’a certes pas viré expérimental pour autant et reste bien ancré dans un rock’n’roll de facture classique. N’empêche, seize ans après leur formation, ils sont encore capables de maintenir allumée la flamme de leur créativité. © CM/Qobuz
