Dès le morceau d'ouverture de ce premier album, « Chuck E's In Love », la personnalité de Rickie Lee Jones s'impose avec éclat. Malgré sa façon de manger ses mots, rendant les paroles presque incompréhensibles, sa voix chatoyante domine incontestablement les mélodies. Ainsi, Rickie Lee Jones emmène l'auditeur dans son univers, des régions reculées et poétiques. L'album, oscillant entre piano minimaliste, cordes country et rythmiques jazz, offre onze chansons d'une qualité égale.

« Night Train » ou « Coolsville » sont devenus des classiques du patrimoine musical américain, et ce n'est pas pour rien. Souvent imitée, jamais égalée, Rickie Lee Jones a surtout le don de communiquer ses émotions sans en faire trop, comme dans le célèbre « The Last Chance Texaco ».
