Paru durant l’automne 1974, ce troisième album de Supertramp est en fait le premier de la formation la plus connue du groupe britannique. Ainsi, Rick Davies et Roger Hodgson sont rejoints par Dougie Thomson à la basse, Bob Siebenberg à la batterie et John Helliwell au sax. Porté par son tubesque single Dreamer, Crime Of The Century bénéficie de cette belle consolidation de casting mais ne change pour autant d’orientation stylistique. L’influence de Pink Floyd est toujours aussi présente (Dark Side Of The Moon sort au même moment) mais n’empêche pas le groupe fan aussi de production ultra-léchée d’insuffler davantage d’éléments pop à sa musique. L’ambiance alterne ainsi entre l’atmosphérique et le plus catchy, le rock progressif et le smooth jazz, bref le voyage qu’offre Supertramp avec Crime Of The Century est aussi vaste que le ciel qui orne la pochette du disque mais beaucoup moins carcéral que les mains agrippées aux barreaux le laisseraient croire.
