Le folk américain est une affaire de tradition, de patrimoine. Des chansons antiques transmises de génération en génération, et qui restent vivantes parce qu’elles évoluent. Des musiciens qui jouent en famille et se passent le flambeau. Joachim Cooder ne déroge pas à la règle. Il est le fils de Ry Cooder, immense musicien dont la vision du folk est panoramique. Joachim a souvent joué avec son père, et c’est aujourd’hui son père qui l’accompagne à l’occasion sur Over That Road I’m Bound, son premier album, consacré à une relecture du répertoire du musicien old-time Uncle Dave Macon. Ce dernier, né en 1870 et mort en 1952, est un des pères fondateurs de la musique folk et country, reconnaissable à sa voix nasillarde haut perchée et son jeu de banjo fébrile. Joachim Cooder lui rend hommage. Mais comme il est un progressiste, il modernise ses reprises, se les approprie. Déjà, il joue de son mbira électrique, étrange instrument d’inspiration africaine qui ressemble à un croisement entre un xylophone et un piano à pouces, et dont le son gracieux donne le ton de l’album. Ses arrangements évoquent autant l’Afrique (on entend Vieux Farka Touré, le fils d’Ali à la guitare) que la musique irlandaise ou celle des Appalaches. Les harmonies vocales glissent comme un vent chaud, les instruments à cordes (guitare, violon, banjo…) tissent de nouveaux motifs sur la trame des chansons d’Uncle Dave Macon. Le tout est magnifiquement produit, subtil, moderne, doux à l’oreille et jamais passéiste. Joachim Cooder est bien le fils de son père. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
