Après une absence dûe à une tuberculose qui l’a éloigné des studios et de la scène pendant deux années, Cat Stevens est de retour avec ce troisième album au titre énigmatique de Mona Bone Jakon, qui, à l'en croire, désigne son pénis. Le style du chanteur et l’atmosphère de ce disque n’ont plus grand-chose à voir avec ses productions précédentes. Signé sur le label Island, joli repaire d’artistes du folk-rock anglais, et produit par l’ex-Yardbirds Paul Samwell-Smith, Cat Stevens revient avec un accompagnement plus minimaliste à la guitare, au piano, ou en petite formation rock ou à cordes (sans orchestre). La voix aussi a changé et adopte désormais un ton plus grave de baryton, tout comme les thèmes des chansons dans l’air du temps.
Le titre « Katmandu », qui bénéficie d'une des rares apparitions hors-Genesis de Peter Gabriel à la flûte, évoque la migration des hippies vers des rêves incertains et « Popstar » revient sur ses désillusions. Le titre culte de cette collection est le dépouillé « Trouble » qui apparaîtra dans la bande originale du film Harold et Maude, et connaîtra d’autres vies dans les interprétations d’Elliott Smith (BO de Thumbsucker), d’Anthony Kiedis et John Frusciante, ou d’Eddie Vedder.
