Fields of Gold se concentre sur les singles à succès de Sting, comme le ferait n’importe quelle autre compilation de plus grands hits, mais ses chansons semblent étonnamment timorées dans ce contexte. Bien sûr, on entend ici un grand nombre de superbes chansons, suffisamment pour prouver ses talents de compositeur ou pour satisfaire ses fans occasionnels. Mais ces chansons sont tout sauf un pari risqué et partagent toutes une tranquillité similaire, d’où une certaine monotonie dans cette collection. Il n’en reste pas moins que Fields of Gold assure la mission nécessaire de présenter tous les gros titres sur un seul et même disque, ce qui suffit à le légitimer malgré ses défauts.
