Steveland Judkins nacque il 13 maggio 1950, e aveva appena 10 anni quando Ronnie White dei Miracles lo presentò al carismatico boss della Motown, Berry Gordy. Il primo successo arrivò tre anni dopo, con Fingertips Pt.2. Il bambino prodigio cieco era un gran lavoratore, ma era anche prigioniero di un contratto molto vincolante, ideato come al solito dal calcolatore Gordy. Stevie era un fenomeno da fiera per il boss della Motown: metteva in fila i dischi d'oro grazie al suo sapiente mix di soul, R&B e pop. La sua prima produzione personale esce solo nel 1970, un album dalle radici rhythm'n'blues: Signed, Sealed And Delivered. Il giorno del suo 21° compleanno, il 13 maggio 1971, il dolce piccolo Stevie, che proveniva da Saginaw, Michigan, raccoglie con tutte le sue forze la sua libertà artistica per consegnare a Gordy la musica che sognava notte e giorno. Socialmente e politicamente impegnato, musicalmente all'avanguardia nelle nuove tecnologie, Stevie Wonder riuscirà così a registrare quattro album essenziali, caratterizzati da una grande originalità e che spaziano tra soul, funk, rock, R&B e pop: Music Of My Mind (1972), Talking Book (1972), Innervisions (1973) e Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974). Con l'aiuto dell'ingegnere del suono Robert Margouleff e del co-produttore Malcolm Cecil, Stevie esplorerà per tre anni le possibilità date dai synth allora in voga (Moog, Arp, Clavinet), oltre a varie tecniche di sovraincisione. Eccezionale polistrumentista, rimane impressionato dal concetto musicale e ideologico della Family di Sly Stone, e ascolta a ripetizione What's Going On di Marvin Gaye, il suo coinquilino alla Motown. Dopo quel periodo d'oro, Stevie Wonder pubblica il brillante Songs In The Key Of Life (1976). I quattro capolavori del periodo 1972/1974 sono sufficienti per consegnare gemme funk originali: Superstition, Boogie On Reggae Woman o Higher Ground. Influenzeranno i musicisti di ogni parte del mondo, e non solo nell'ambito del groove. Dato che è sempre stata legata alle strutture melodiche e armoniche proprie del pop, la musica di Stevie Wonder è caratterizzata da un soul unico, che non ha eguali. © MZ
