Water Seed

A band that plays old-school funk and R&B with a contemporary energy and a timeless commitment to danceable grooves and quality musicianship, Water Seed are a New Orleans-based group that enjoyed a breakthrough in 2017 after over a decade of hard work. Water Seed specialize in dance music in the manner of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Gap Band, and the Commodores, merging upbeat grooves with a smooth attack reinforced by horns and keyboards, though they're also capable of performing a credible love ballad as well as the laid-back funk of their Crescent City home. Water Seed spent years maintaining a busy touring schedule and building an underground following before their 2017 album, We Are Stars, became a chart success and won them a larger audience. Their live show being a major part of their appeal, it came as little surprise that they chose to follow up We Are Stars with Say Yeah! Live at the Blue Nile, a live album recorded during a gig in their hometown. Water Seed were formed by drummer Lou Hill, who grew up listening to hip-hop and rock before he formed his first band when he was 12 years old. While he was in high school, he played drums in the marching band; a fellow percussionist in the band, Stanton Moore, went on to join the celebrated New Orleans group Galactic. Hill began to immerse himself in the history of New Orleans music, digging deeper into the rich creative heritage of the Crescent City while attending Xavier University on a music scholarship. He also played in a funk group called Afrodeezifunk and briefly worked with R&B veteran Ernie K-Doe. While at Xavier, Hill formed the first version of Water Seed with keyboard player and vocalist J Sharp, initially intending it to be a project that wrote material for others. But Hill and Sharp soon decided they could do a better job with their songs than other people, so they put a new emphasis on performing. In 2005, after New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Hill and Sharp relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where they teamed with Cinese Love (vocals and flute) and Shaleyah (vocals), with the foursome writing and recording material as a team. The first Water Seed EP, Two Words, was self-released in 2006, while an album, Fresh, followed in 2010. Water Seed subsequently released a handful of singles and EPs, but they spread the word about their music through touring, gaining an audience through a steady schedule of live performances. In 2014, Water Seed left Atlanta to return to New Orleans, where they added a fifth member of the band, vocalist and songwriter Berkley the Artist, while occasional side musicians were brought aboard for particular projects. By this time, Water Seed's schedule had become busy enough that Hill had to give up his day job as a teacher, as the band became his livelihood. In 2017, Water Seed released the album We Are Stars, which Hill considered their first proper full-length rather than a demo or production project. Between extensive live appearances and the single "Bollywood," We Are Stars became a commercial success, rising to number 27 on the national R&B album chart. More touring followed, and a show at the Blue Nile club, a venue in New Orleans that had long been one of Water Seed's favorite places to play, was recorded for their next full-length release, 2018's Say Yeah! Live at the Blue Nile, which debuted at number 16 on the R&B album chart.
