The Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited

A spiritual jazz ensemble led by keyboardist Bobby Hamilton, they were best known for their cult 1972 LP, Dream Queen. Hailing from Utica, New York, the Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited was formed by bandleader Hamilton, who played Fender Rhodes as well as some percussion and vocals. Working with a cadre of local musicians, he recorded 1972's Dream Queen, released on the Alafia Enterprises label. The album showcased the group's vibrantly funky blend of spiritual jazz and hard bop, a sound falling somewhere in between Pharoah Sanders, Charles Earland, and Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band. Hamilton remained largely obscure until fans of vintage soul-jazz began rediscovering Dream Queen. This interest eventually paved the way for the album to be reissued, first in Japan and France, before Now-Again Records reissued Dream Queen in 2022 as part of Record Store Day.
