Tapeworms

French trio Tapeworms play an imaginative blend of electronic-tinged indie pop, influenced by shoegaze, grunge, J-pop, and video game music. Their 2020 full-length Funtastic is aptly titled, but beneath the twisted electronic textures, bright melodies, and hazy guitars, the lyrics touch on doubt, uncertainty, and heartache. Tapeworms is made up of Margot Magnière and brothers Théo and Elliott Poyer. They formed in Lille in 2016, and released their home-recorded debut EP, All Stars, containing three originals and a Daniel Johnston cover, near the end of the year. A cassette edition appeared on Dirty Slap Records in early 2017. The band stretched out from the classic shoegaze sound of their debut with a more experimental second EP, Everything Will Be Fine, which was released in 2018. Funtastic, their full-length debut, was a vivid burst of noisy guitar hooks and bubbling electronics. The album was jointly released by Howlin' Banana Records, Cranes Records, and Coypu Records in 2020.
