Ryland James

Singer and songwriter Ryland James' gospel-tinged contemporary pop comes with a resonant, soul-inspired delivery. He made his major-label debut with an eponymous EP in 2020, leading to two Juno Award nominations. He followed up in 2021 with releases including the love song "3 Purple Hearts." Raised in Deseronto, Ontario, in a family that included a grandmother who played gospel piano, James sang from a young age. Also a child athlete, he was inspired to focus on singing at ten after watching a contestant on TV's Britain's Got Talent cover the Jackson 5. In his late teens, James was discovered by music manager Chris Smith, who signed him to Universal partner 21 Entertainment. His first single, 2017's "Good to You," got a Universal release in early 2019 and was followed by a Canadian tour in support of Alessia Cara. He put out a Christmas song and garnered millions of streams with "In My Head" before the end of the year. His Ryland James EP arrived in September 2020. It included the Billboard Adult Top 40-charting track "Water." The EP A Little Christmas followed before the end of the year. In early 2021, James issued the solo single "Blame" and was featured on the Shaun Frank dance track "Save Me" around the time he received a Juno nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. His eponymous EP was nominated for Pop Album of the Year. Inspired by a romantic relationship and coming out as queer, his single "3 Purple Hearts" followed in June 2021.
