Miklós Spányi
Miklós Spányi is a rather unique figure among keyboard players: he is thoroughly accomplished on a range of somewhat disparate instruments: organ, harpsichord, fortepiano, tangent piano, piano, and clavichord. He is also unique in another respect: since 1995 he has been engaged in recording all the keyboard concertos and solo keyboard music of C.P.E. Bach for BIS Records, a venture never before attempted. He has thus presented the recorded premieres of a number of forgotten C.P.E. Bach works, many of which have recently been assessed as masterpieces. Spányi is considered one of the foremost experts on the music of C.P.E. Bach and is knowledgeable in general on Baroque music and historic practices regarding that period's keyboard instruments.
Miklós Spányi was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1962. His first advanced studies were at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he took instruction from János Sebestyén and Ferenc Gergely. He later studied with Jos van Immerseel at the Royal Flemish Conservatory, then moved onto Munich's Hochschule für Musik for studies with Hedwig Bilgram.
In 1984 Spányi achieved his first important breakthrough, winning the International Harpsichord Competition in Nantes, France. Three years later he scored another triumph in France, this time at the Paris competition, where he again captured first prize. Spányi's first recordings began to appear around this time, among them a J.S. Bach CD of organ works that appeared on several smaller labels, some of which, unfortunately, attributed the performances to another artist. Still, by the early '90s, Spányi was not only a familiar figure on the concert and recording scene in Europe, but had become an expert in the music of C.P.E. Bach.
With the launching of his ambitious Bach project for BIS Records in 1995, Spányi also began devoting time to the revival of the clavichord. He wrote scholarly articles on the subject of this instrument, such as "Johann Sebastian Bach's Clavichord Technique Described By Griepenkerl," which appeared in the publication Clavichord International in 2000.
In the new century Spányi has taught music at two important Finnish music schools: the Oulu Conservatory and Sibelius Academy. The busy Spányi has also turned to conducting in recent years, leading the Finnish group Ensemble OpusX, which accompanied him in some of the C.P.E. Bach concerto recordings. By 2011, Spányi was up to Volume 17 of the concertos, and Volume 22 of the solo works.
