Lous and The Yakuza

With her global point of view and cross-genre flow, Brussels-based Congolese singer/songwriter Lous and the Yakuza delivers speedy rap verses and smoothly sung vocals over hypnotic, trap-influenced production. Bridging continents and traditions, she connects with listeners through her perspective as a young black woman living in Europe. She scored her first hit in 2019 with the single "Dilemme" from her debut LP, 2020's Gore. More singles followed, including the fierce "Kisé," which appeared on the full-length Iota in 2022. Born Marie-Pierra Kakoma in Lubumbashi, she was influenced by her parents, both doctors, and their love of classical, traditional Congolese, and Rwandan music. Later, she balanced those early inspirations with her own love of acts like Britney Spears and James Blake. When she was five years old, her parents fled the Congo and moved to Belgium. A few years later, the family returned to Africa, settling in Rwanda. However, by the time she was in her teens, Lous yearned to return to Belgium. So, at the age of 15, she moved to the town of Namur. She majored in philosophy before deciding to pursue music, despite her parents' apprehensions. For a time, she experienced a number of hardships, living on the streets and sleeping in recording studios. In a few years, she managed to complete a handful of EPs, recording mostly in French and on occasion in her native Kinyarwanda and Kiswahili. Lous' songs caught the attention of Sony, and she signed with the label in 2019. Blending R&B, trap, and chanson française influences, she recruited producer Ponko for the pulsing "Dilemme," her debut single. The track arrived that September and became an international hit. She followed with "Tout Est Gore," produced by El Guincho (Rosalía). Both tracks landed on her major-label debut, Gore (Columbia/Sony), in October 2020. The single "Amigo" featuring Joey Bada$$ appeared the following year, with the full-length Iota, featuring the euphoric "Kisé," arriving in 2022. Later that year, Lous teamed up with Adekunle Gold on the single "Handle Me."
