Lil Berete

The prolific, Toronto-born artist Yaya Berete delivers a heavily Auto-Tuned brand of contemporary rap which faintly incorporates African and Caribbean rhythms. In his first four years of recording, he managed to rack up over 70 million worldwide online streams. Berete was raised with his two sisters on the southside of Regent Park, the largest housing project in Canada and the backdrop for many of his lyrical ruminations. His father died in a car accident when he was very young, while his mother, Cheka Katenen Dioubate, is a recognized Guinean musician, continuing in the family tradition of the Djeli. Because of his unruly behavior, Berete's mother sent him to live with her sister in Conakry, Guinea when was eight. It was a humbling four-year experience that opened his eyes to the resourceful nature of the capitol's people in the face of real hardship. On his return to Regent City, he made great efforts to bond with peers from the northside of the neighborhood, and was ultimately inspired by Acerrr to pursue a career in music. The switch in neighborhoods ultimately inspired the name of his collective, STN, or Southside to Northside. Early self-released efforts from Lil Berete -- the 2017 singles "Turn Up" and "Real" -- caught the attention of numerous labels, and by summer of the following year he was signed to New Gen, an imprint of London's XL Recordings. Later in 2018 he released his first mixtape, Icebreaker, but not before issuing the track "100 Times," a collaborative effort with STK Rax. 2019 brought no fewer than three projects, STN: The Mixtape -- a joint effort with Acerrr and JoEazy -- the New Gen-backed 1 Way Out, and the largely retrospective Ride or Die. By 2020, Lil Berete had determinedly broken away from New Gen, giving him real artistic freedom. He released two standalone singles, "Doing Time" and "Treacherous," before appearing on two key Tizzy Stackz cuts. In March 2021, he issued Icebreaker 2, which included the singles "Murda," "War Ready," and "No Distractions."
