FRAN LOBO

Fran Lobo brings together elements of soulful pop, gothic rock, and pulsing alternative dance music in her fractured, nocturnal club tracks. A singer, songwriter, and producer from London, she emerged in the mid-2010s with a series of hypnotic EPs including 2015's Beautiful Blood EP and 2016's Surround EP, the latter of which saw her collaborating with other up-and-coming electronic artists. Engineered by Stereolab's Andy Ramsay and filled with dramatic tension, her first full-length venture, the also guest-heavy Burning It Feels Like, arrived in 2023. Raised in North East London, and of Indian descent, Lobo grew up surrounded by her mother's Bollywood, R&B, and pop proclivities, her father's preference for rock and country, and her brother's love of metal and nu-metal, along with her own fondness for Spice Girls and music reality shows like Popstars: The Rivals. Applying her eclectic musical tastes to her own music, she went on to conduct and compose for the London women's group Deep Throat Choir while keeping busy in the studio on projects by friends like Lucinda Chua, Laura Misch, and Coby Sey, among many others. Lobo delivered her first EP, Beautiful Blood EP, in July 2015. Having a hand in production from the beginning of her recording career, it was recorded with help from Pascal Bideau, Conway Ellis, and Steve Weston. She followed it up in November 2016 with Surround EP, which was recorded with support from the PRS Women Make Music Fund. With contributions from Bideau and Ellis, it featured remixes with similarly unorthodox electronic artists Auclair and Hannah Holland. Meanwhile staying active on the scene with the occasional single, she returned with her third EP, the darker, more industrial-leaning Brave, on Slow Dance Recordings in mid-2020. Produced by Lobo alone, it was engineered by Stereolab's Andy Ramsay. A deluxe version with remixes by Loraine James, Glows, Jnr XL, and Terror Peaks appeared a year later. Brave brought her to the attention of Heavenly Recordings, which released her debut for the label, the eerie, dystopian "All I Want," in February 2023. A collaborative single on Amorphous Sounds, "The Beginning" with Blood Moon Project and Laura Groves, appeared two months later, before Heavenly released Lobo's full-length debut, the self-produced Burning It Feels Like, in August of that year. With Ramsay returning as engineer, and with additional production by Ramsay, Bideau, Sam Beste, and Jimmy Robertson, it included appearances from a host of collaborators, among them vocalists Auclair, RAHEL, and Abimaro, whose choir-like harmonies were a distinctive feature of the album's larger- -- and witchier- -- than-life sound.
