Festival

Recognizable by their rich vocal harmonies and spooky spirit, FESTIVAL's eclectic sound mixes elements of folk, traditional gospel, and psychedelic pop. The short-lived Brooklyn outfit released their first album, Come, Arrow, Come!, in 2008 before eventually issuing a previously unreleased archival album, All Golden Stay, in 2024. Formed in Brooklyn by siblings Alexis "Lex" Powell (voice, guitar) and Lindsay Powell (voice, guitar, kalimba, zither, piano), FESTIVAL recorded a debut album steeped in trippy, medieval-haunted psych-folk with supporting members Jake Orrall (electric guitar), Jamin Orrall (drums, percussion), and Matt Martin (drums). Titled Come, Arrow, Come!, it was produced by the Powells and Jeremy Ferguson (Josh Rouse, Be Your Own Pet) and released on Drag City imprint Language of Stone in April of 2008. As members embarked on other projects, including Lindsay's better-known solo endeavor Fielded, the sisters, accompanied by their brother Mike, released a cover of "Tonight You Belong to Me." A song previously recorded by '50s sister act Patience and Prudence, it captured FESTIVAL live at the VPRO Festival in 2009. A year later, the three siblings contributed "Today's Adventure!" to a television-inspired compilation by Esopus Magazine (theirs was a tribute to The Adventures of Pete & Pete). Then consisting of Lex, Lindsay, and Mike Powell with William Tyler (guitar, additional vocals), Seth Lorinczi (bass), Helena Espvall (cello), Jen Harrison (French horn), and Maria Pugnetti (additional vocals), the group prepared a second album over a span of more than five years and in as many cities, as they pursued other music projects. They later recovered the album off a hard drive. Featuring a similar palette and mood as their debut, All Golden Stay arrived on Make the Fun in March 2024.
