Bor Zuljan

Bor Zuljan has brought fresh repertory and methods to performances of the repertory for lute and other plucked stringed instruments. He records for the Ricercar label. Zuljan was born in Slovenia in 1987. He should not be confused with the Slovenian rock guitarist of the same name, born in 1969. Zuljan attended the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music, studying both jazz and classical music. After graduating, he moved to Koblenz, Germany, for studies with guitarist Aniello Desiderio. In 2007, Zuljan enrolled in the guitar and lute performance program at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland, earning bachelor's and master's degrees at the school and mastering a variety of stringed instruments. His principal teacher was Dusan Bogdanovic. Zuljan specialized in medieval music during his studies there but has mostly performed and recorded Renaissance works. Zuljan also earned a master's degree in lute pedagogy at the Haute École de Musique. Since 2011, Zuljan has been the artistic director of the Slovenian early music festival Flores Musicae. Zuljan performs widely as a soloist and with a variety of early music ensembles, including Vox Luminis, Il Giardino Armonico, and Le Concert Brisé. He has often been heard in duos with Bogdanovic and baritone Romain Bockler, whom he backed on the 2019 album Josquin: Adieu mes amours, as part of the duo Dulces Exuviae. Zuljan is also the leader of his own ensemble, La Lyra, which has been heard on the album La barca del mio amore; that album featured music by lutenist-composer Giacomo Gorzanis and was based on a critical edition made by Zuljan himself. Zuljan made his solo debut on the Ricercar label in 2020 with the album Dowland: A Fancy. He returned with Bockler and Dulces Exuviae on Ricercar with the album Toutes les nuits in 2023; the album featured music by such composers as Philippe Verdelot, Bartolomeo Tromboncino, and Francisco Guerrero.
