La band dal nome più criptico degli anni 2010 si era rapidamente guadagnata un nome nella scena indie pop inglese con il suo album di debutto An Awesome Wave (titolo ispirato dallo scrittore Bret Easton Ellis), vincitore di un Mercury Prize nel 2012 grazie al successo della hit Breezeblocks. Dieci anni dopo, la band di Leeds, (troppo) spesso paragonata ai Radiohead, è diventata una scommessa sicura per gli organizzatori dei festival e si è concessa cinque anni per creare il successore di Relaxer, pubblicato nel 2017.
The Dream non cambia i termini dell'equazione stabilita dal trio composto da Joe Newman (voce, chitarra), Gus Unger-Hamilton (tastiere) e Thom Green (batteria), con un folk-rock a volte bluesy, a volte tinto di elettronica, ma sempre caratterizzato da un suono vaporoso e vellutato, come se tutto fosse stato registrato attraverso una scatola di ovatta, come Bane, brano che apre questo quarto lavoro registrato nel 2020, tra due lockdown. I fan degli Alt-J non resteranno delusi da questo album colmo di melodie sempre orecchiabili, in particolare i singoli U&ME e Hard Drive Gold. Da segnalare anche The Actor, un brano giostrato su chitarre dal sapore psichedelico che racconta la vicenda della morte di John Belushi, avvenuta nel 1981 per overdose all'hotel Chateau Marmont di Los Angeles (“Why do I keep on returning to you? Cocaine, cocaine”). E poi Joe Newman non esita a tirare fuori il suo lato più commovente sulla ballata acustica Get Better o su Chicago, che mescola una voce straziante con un arpeggio di piano, con un Thom Green a livelli quasi techno dietro la sua batteria, per uno dei brani più riusciti di un album che si conclude con un perfetto doppio blues (Walk a Mile e Powders). © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
