Dopo un esordio che la annunciava come la nuova reginetta effimera del country pop, Ashley Monroe ha tirato fuori un certo carattere, avventurandosi anche al di fuori dei sentieri battuti di Nashville. È così che la cantante di Knoxville, Tennessee, si è ritrovata a competere con Jack White e i suoi Raconteurs e a formare le Pistol Annies insieme ad Angaleena Presley e Miranda Lambert. Con The Blade, il suo terzo album uscito nel 2015, confermava di saper padroneggiare un ampio spettro artistico, sia a livello di voce che di strumentazione. Senza rivoluzionare il genere, la Monroe pubblicava un disco di country contemporaneo molto ben fatto, traboccante di melodie efficaci e dotato soprattutto di una voce dalla purezza sconvolgente, ispirata alle intoccabili Dolly Parton e Emmylou Harris... Tre anni dopo, Sparrow mostra un’artista sempre più avventurosa, a cui non interessa scalare le classifiche remando nel senso della corrente. Prodotto dall’eccellente Dave Cobb ‒ al quale si devono album di Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Shooter Jennings, Colter Wall, Zac Brown Band e Jason Isbell ‒ questo quarto opus intende portare il country su sentieri imboccati in passato da gente raffinata come Bobbie Gentry, Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Rick Hall, Shelby Lynne e persino l’Elton John degli esordi. Perciò, più che un disco di country pop moderno, Sparrow può definirsi un disco all’antica o, più precisamente, atemporale. D’altronde, è ammirevole il modo in cui Cobb tenda a sfumare se non a cancellare del tutto ogni eventuale traccia dell’epoca attuale…
«Questo disco parla dell’accettazione dei mali del passato, di perdono e di libertà, tutte cose necessarie per andare avanti. Il più delle volte, è proprio dagli eventi più terribili che nascono le canzoni più belle. E questo è ciò che maggiormente rispetto nella musica». Ashley Monroe scopre dunque la carta della terapia. Il suo è infatti un album introspettivo ‒ i problemi con sua madre, con se stessa, le immagini della gioventù che riaffiorano… ‒ ma arriva a tutti. Perché, come Alison Krauss e Lee Ann Womack o, meglio ancora, come Kacey Musgraves, ella conosce il potenziale emotivo e lacrimevole di un argomento così ricco di pathos, ma non perde mai la sua dignità, trasmette una certa serenità e soprattutto lo fa con eleganza.
