Con l’album Quickies, appena uscito su Nonesuch, Stephin Merritt, l’uomo dietro The Magnetic Fields (un omaggio non all’album di Jean-Michel Jarre, ma a Les Champs magnétiques, un libro dei surrealisti francesi André Breton e Philippe Soupault) è tornato in pista, continuando a coltivare il suo credo fatto di bizzarrie, di ironia folk low-fi, nella linea di un Beck o di un Adam Green (con brani come The Biggest Tits in History o I Wish I Were a Prostitute Again). Estremamente prolifico, il musicista di Boston moltiplica i suoi alias e le sue avventure (The 6ths, The Gothic Archies o Future Bible Heroes), pur mantenendo la sua rotta verso l’assurdo e la fantasia. Dopo l’ultimo concept album autobiografico intitolato 50 Song Memoir (del 2017) e comprendente cinquanta brani per ogni anno trascorso sulla terra, Merritt ora ci va più leggero con Quickies e le sue 28 canzoni, che trattano gli argomenti più disparati e che sono estremamente brevi. Death Pact (Let’s Make A), ad esempio, dura solo 17 secondi! Quickies è un album pieno di significati nascosti e doppi sensi, e non privo di un lato sessuale (una “quickie”, o come si dice in italiano “una sveltina”, una relazione veloce). In questo universo di dolce decadimento, a volte troviamo echi parodici, sul tono dell’umorismo, come (I Want To Join) A Biker Gang, brano alla Dandy Warhols; o più commoventi, con una voce che ricorda Scott Walker, su The Boy In The Corner; o incredibilmente Leonard Cohen su I Wish I Had Fangs And a Tail.
