Dagli anni '90, la band della scatenata scozzese Shirley Manson non si è mai fermata. E per fortuna! No Gods, No Masters rompe il ciclico silenzio di cinque anni della band del Wisconsin formata intorno al mitico produttore Butch Vig (Siamese Dream degli Smashing Pumpkins, Dirty dei Sonic Youth, Nevermind dei Nirvana). I Garbage hanno centellinato le pubblicazioni di loro album, con una fan base che gli è rimasta fedele. Questo settimo album ha iniziato a prendere forma nell'aprile 2018, quando i Garbage si sono riuniti da Vig; l'hanno registrato un anno dopo, a Los Angeles, insieme al fidato Billy Bush; e nel 2020 l'hanno terminato, questa volta a distanza, a causa della pandemia. Il brano di apertura, The Men Who Ruled The World, parte subito all'attacco: contro il razzismo, il patriarcato e il capitalismo. “Era il nostro modo di cercare di dare un senso a questo fottuto mondo fuori di testa e al caos in cui ci troviamo”, spiega la Manson. Fedeli alla loro formula pop frenetica dalle sfumature gotiche, che non si discosta molto da quella degli esordi, i Garbage imbastiscono una serie di brani, a volte oscuri, a volte illuminanti, sempre caratterizzati dalla voce di Manson, talvolta potente (Uncomfortable Me) o sussurrata (Godhead), che vogliono alleggerire i tormenti causati dai tempi moderni.
