Qualche anno prima di che Amy Winehouse attirasse l'attenzione internazionale con Back to Black, l' irriverente cantante soul britannica si era già fatta un nome nella scena musicale del Regno Unito con Frank, il suo debutto del 2003. Nominato per il prestigioso Mercury Music Prize, il disco scorre agevolmente grazie alla produzione di leggera aria jazz di Salaam Remi, che fa brillare la espressiva voce della Winehouse, fortemente influenzata da Billie Holiday e Dinah Washington, in particolare sul sottile trip-hop “Stronger Than Me”, il potente “You Sent Me Flying” e il sensuale “I Heard Love Is Blind”. Anche se meno costante o audace dall'album successivo, Frank è un ammirevole esordio che dovrebbe conquistare tutti coloro che sono andati in estasi per Back to Black.
