Alcune leggendarie coppie di musicisti, in duetti misti, hanno lasciato il loro segno nella storia della musica popolare. Basta pronunciare i loro nomi per far brillare immediatamente gli occhi di molti appassionati: Sonny & Cher, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris, Les Paul & Mary Ford, She & Him... Oggi, un nuovo inaspettato tandem entra in scena, e il suo ingresso è accolto da un Qobuzissime! Da un lato, un mito del rock degli anni d'oro che di tanto in tanto emerge dal suo guscio: Paul Simonon, ex-bassista dei Clash (ovvero, il protagonista della copertina di London Calling!) e, più recentemente, membro dei The Good, The Bad and The Queen a fianco a Damon Albarn, (il compianto) Tony Allen e Simon Tong. Dall'altro lato troviamo Galen Ayers, la figlia del geniale Kevin Ayers, l'eccentrico britannico che ha co-fondato i Soft Machine ed è stato una figura di spicco nella scena prog e psichedelica di Canterbury... L'album che hanno appena registrato assieme, tuttavia, è lontano anni luce dai loro curriculum personali. Fin dalle prime note di Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?, Galen e Paul giocano la carta dell'album cantastorie, della semplice - ma mai semplicistica - passeggiata tra stili, paesaggi e territori. Visceralmente cosmopolita, persino europeo (cantano in inglese, ma anche in spagnolo), è un album davvero di classe, nella sua disinvoltura e nell'atmosfera da cantore di strada. Con i suoi profumi mariachi, le sonorità reggae e lo spirito spensierato della musica da varietà italiano e francese degli anni '60, l'album di Galen & Paul è retrò senza suonare antiquato, ironico senza essere banale e poetico senza cadere nei cliché. In mezzo allo Yin / Yang delle loro due voci, il duo è supportato da musicisti impeccabili (il chitarrista Simon Tong, il batterista jazz Seb Rochford e Dan Donovan alle tastiere) e da Tony Visconti, il produttore di Bowie, in genere più abituato a dischi dal "suono grosso" o addirittura faraonico. Infine, per aggiungere un colore in più, Damon Albarn suona la sua melodica in alcuni brani. Negli appena 38 minuti di Can We Do Tomorrow Another Day?, Paul Simonon e Galen Ayers ci portano in giro per il mondo.
