Marian Anderson, cantatrice de combats

La magnifique carrière de la cantatrice contralto afro-américaine Marian Anderson se confond avec sa lutte incessante contre le racisme. Elle a 94 ans lorsqu’elle reçoit enfin, en 1991, le Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award en reconnaissance de toute une vie de musique. Mais combien le chemin menant à cette tardive reconnaissance fut long et semé d’épines…

Une artiste rare à l'opéra
Eu égard à sa brillante et longue carrière, Marian Anderson a relativement peu enregistré. Il n’existe aucun enregistrement intégral d’opéra et très peu de témoignages en ce domaine, à l’exception d’extraits du Bal masqué de Verdi capté au Metropolitan Opera de New York, lors de son unique apparition sur une scène d’opéra en 1955. Peu encline à se produire dans un théâtre, elle a refusé de nombreux rôles. Seul Rudolf Bing, le célèbre directeur du MET, est parvenu à la persuader de se produire dans sa célèbre salle pour incarner le rôle de la sorcière Ulrica, sous la direction de Dimitri Mitropoulos.

Cette expérience tardive n’aura cependant aucune suite. Marian Anderson, alors âgée de 58 ans, ne garde pas un grand souvenir de cette soirée : « Le rideau s’est levé et j’étais là sur scène, mélangeant le breuvage de la sorcière. J’ai tremblé, et quand le public a applaudi avant que je puisse chanter une seule note, j’ai senti un nœud dans ma gorge », se souvient-elle. C’est ainsi qu’elle fut le tout premier artiste lyrique afro-américain à briser le plafond de verre en se produisant sur la prestigieuse scène new-yorkaise, ouvrant la voie à ses consœurs Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry, Jessye Norman, Barbara Hendricks ou Shirley Verret.

Parmi les enregistrements de Maria Anderson à découvrir absolument, il faut écouter en premier lieu ses trois versions de la Rhapsodie pour contralto de Brahms sous la direction, excusez du peu, de Pierre Monteux, Fritz Reiner et Eugene Ormandy. Comme ses contemporaines Kathleen Ferrier ou Aafje Heynis, l'Américaine s’est en quelque sorte identifiée à cette œuvre dans laquelle son timbre chaleureux et grave fait merveille. Signalons aussi de beaux Kindertotenlieder de Gustav Mahler enregistrés à San Francisco sous la baguette de Pierre Monteux. Plusieurs récitals de lieder avec les pianistes Kosti Vehanen et Franz Rupp sont disponibles avec les compositeurs favoris de Marian Anderson, Bach, Schubert, Brahms (superbes Vier ernste Gesänge, op. 121), Strauss et, bien sûr, son ami Sibelius.

Il existe aussi quelques documents live, comme ce fameux concert au Lincoln Memorial en 1939, patronné par Eleanor Roosevelt. Après les discours officiels, dans le froid glacial de janvier et accompagné de son ami finlandais Kosti Vehanen, elle chante un extrait de La Favorite de Donizetti, l’Ave Maria de Schubert et des gospels longuement acclamés. On la retrouvera bien évidemment dans ses très nombreux enregistrements de negro-spirituals réalisés dès ses débuts au disque en 1924 jusqu’à son ultime apparition à New York en 1965. Une manière de découvrir une des parts les plus émouvantes de son répertoire et de mesurer l’évolution de sa voix et de son art pendant plus de quarante ans.

Avec l’âge, la carrière de Marian Anderson commence à se ralentir, mais elle est devenue une icône très respectée dans le monde et aux États-Unis où elle est invitée pour de grandes messes médiatiques, chantant deux fois pour le président John Kennedy. Elle continue à donner des récitals à travers le monde jusqu’à sa tournée d’adieu en 1965 qui s’achève en beauté par un concert au Carnegie Hall de New York, le 18 avril 1965, avec le fidèle Franz Rupp au piano. Ce Farewell Recital est édité et disponible sur le label RCA. Dans ce long concert de 25 pièces, la voix de 68 ans est très abîmée mais l’esprit demeure et l’émotion est encore palpable. 

En 1993, Marian Anderson publie ses mémoires, sous le titre My Lord, What a Morning, qui furent un succès de librairie. Elle s’y exprime avec ses mots ; tendres et modestes. C’est un journal de sa vie qui retrace aussi un moment peu glorieux de l’histoire américaine. D'ailleurs, si la ville de Philadelphie avait boudé la jeune cantatrice au début du XXe siècle, elle s’est rattrapée depuis en élevant sa demeure au rang de trésor national sous la forme du Marian Anderson Residence Museum, déclaré monument historique de l’État de Pennsylvanie.
