Rubel

Singer-songwriter Rubel is a 21st century highlight on the fertile, vibrant, Brazilian music scene, combining sounds from alternative music and MPB, always with the soft, calm, delivery, sensual singing voice, and carefully constructed atmospherics; they are his musical trademark. Pearl, his 2015 debut album was self-released to YouTube, along with a self-directed video for "Quando Bate That Saudade." Both went viral in Brazil. Second album Casas arrived in 2018, and earned a Latin Grammy nod thanks to single "Partilhar," a collaboration with Brazilian folk-pop duo ANAVITÓRIA. Following the album's release, he returned to Rio and formed a band. In 2023, he issued As Palavras, Vol. 1 & 2, a star-studded effort that netted him another Latin Grammy nomination. In May 2024, the album was released in the U.S. and Europe by Mr. Bongo. Rubel was born Rubel Canta Adoniran Barbosa in the city of Volta Redonda, in Rio De Janeiro state. At seven, his family relocated to the city of Rio De Janeiro, where he attended elementary and high schools. He picked up music from listening to the radio, and watching music videos on the internet. As if by osmosis, learning to play instruments came easy. By the time he was in high school he was writing songs and playing in a band called A Corleones, but it was mostly for fun; Rubel was setting his sights on an acting career. He quit playing music for three years while he pursued a degree in acting from the University of Texas at Austin. Inspired by the Texas capital's abundant, wildly varied, boundaryless music scene, Rubel began writing songs again. He set up a home studio and rented a ton of gear from instruments, microphones, amps, keyboards, and a sound board. He wanted to capture the unfettered youthul freedom that Austin's music scene provided him. He cut seven songs, playing all instruments and singing. Without expectation, he uploaded the record, now titled Pearl, to YouTube, and forgot about it as he continued with school. It took two years, but the album went viral in Brazil. In 2016, he uploaded the non-album single "Quando Bate That Saudade"; it garnered more than 100 million views. After hearing the news about the album's unexpected success, Rubel finished school then left Texas or Los Angeles hoping to build an acting career. After working at four different production companies, he was miserable and disillusioned. Coming to the conclusion that Brazil was a much more fertile place for him, he returned home and formed a band. He recorded his second album, Casas in a state of the art studio with a top shelf cast that included chamber strings, horns, a large backing chorus and, of course, his band. He wrote or co-write all but one of the set's 14 tracks. The set's first single "Partilhar '' was recorded in collaboration with folk-pop duo ANAVITÓRIA (Ana Caetano and Vitória Falcão). Used in the soundtrack of the telenovela Malhação: Vidas Brasileiras, it registered more than 81 million views at YouTube, and more than 125 million audio streams. That year he also joined Adriana Calcanhotto and Mahmundi, on the double A-side single, "Cariocas" / "Por Que Você Faz Cinema?" for Sony. The year also saw "Quando Bate That Saudade" appear on the soundtrack of TV series Onde Nascem os Fortes. In September 2018, Casas received a Latin Grammy nomination for the Best Rock or Alternative Music Album in the Portuguese Language category. Rubel toured and played in more than 60 cities in Brazil; he won some prime slots for festival appearances. In 2020, he released a handful of singles and collaborations. He accompanied Gal Costa on a live reading of Caetano Veloso's "Baby," and a few months later he joined her in the studio to record Veloso's "Coração Vagabundo." Further, he issued a live version of "Mentiras" in duet with Calcanhotto, and the jazzy samba "Bolso de Fora" under his own legal name. In 2021 he joined Mahmundi on the hit single "Aposta," and Bruna Magalhaes on her hit, "No Teu Pescoco," He also released and "Ponta-Cabeca" on which he was joined by Tiago Nocarato, Janeiro, and Paulo Novaes. Though Rubel didn't release any music in 2022, he made up for lost time when he delivered the double length, 20-song, As Palavras, Vol. 1 & 2 as his third album in March 2023. The star-studded offering included many instrumentalists, and a large host of duets with singers that included Xande De Pilares ("Grao de Area"); Dora Morelenbaum ("Assum Preto"); and Milton Nascimento (the co-written "Lua de Garrafa"). More ambitious than either of its predecessors, the album's songs careened across forró, MPB, pagode and samba, as well as modern baile funk, rasteirinha and hip-hop. It sold spectacularly in Brazil and earned a Latin Grammy nomination. In May 2024, the U.K's Mr. Bongo licensed and re-released As Palavras, Vol. 1 & 2, just as Som Livre issued the hard-grooving pop samba single "Erasmo Esteve (Tijuca Miluca)" with Erasmo Carlos and Emicida.
