Mike Murley

A highly regarded Canadian jazz saxophonist, Mike Murley is a versatile performer whose work has straddled acoustic post-bop, big band, and fusion. Following early work in the '80s, Murley rose to fame after winning the Juno Award for Best Jazz Album for 1990's Two Sides. He also took home Juno Awards with his contemporary fusion group Metalwood and released a bevy of his own sessions, including 2002's Juno-winning Live at the Senator, 2006's The Melody Lingers On, and 2012's Juno Award-winning trio album Test of Time. In 2018, Murley and Metalwood again took home a Juno Award for their reunion album, Twenty. Born in 1961 in Nova Scotia, Murley started playing saxophone at age 13. He studied music at York University in Toronto where he graduated in 1986 with a BFA. Along the way, he took private lessons with Don Palmer, Dave Liebman, and Dave Holland. It was also during the '80s that he was a member of the contemporary fusion ensembles Shuffle Demons and Time Warp. He made his recorded debut as leader with 1988's The Curse. As a sideman, he has played with a bevy of name artists, including David Braid, Renee Rosnes, John Scofield, David Occhipinti, Rob McConnell, and Norma Winstone, as well as Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, and John Abercrombie, to name a few. In 1990, he delivered his sophomore album, Two Sides, which won the Juno Award for Best Jazz Album. He also earned another Juno nomination for 1992's Time and Tide. More well-received small group albums followed, including 1994's Departure and 1996's Conversation Piece. It was also in the '90s that he formed his contemporary electric fusion-influenced group Metalwood, featuring pianist/trumpeter Brad Turner, bassist Chris Tarry and drummer Ian Froman. They debuted to acclaim, picking up Juno Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for both 1997's Metalwood and 1998's Metalwood II. More albums followed, including Metalwood 3, 2001's Recline, and 2003's Chronic. A concert album, Live at the Senator, arrived in 2002 and won Murley his second Juno Award for Best Jazz Album. Two more albums followed, including 2004's National Jazz Award-winning Extra Time and 2006's The Melody Lingers On. Following 2010's Still Rollin', he picked up a third Juno Award for 2012's Test of Time, a trio collaboration with guitarist Ed Bickert and bassist Steve Wallace. Another trio album, Looking Back, appeared in 2014. A Juno nomination also came his way for 2016's The North, a quartet album with pianist David Braid, bassist Johnny Aman, and drummer Anders Mogensen. In 2016, he reunited with Metalwood for a tour and the album Twenty, which won the Juno Award for Best Group Jazz Album of the Year. Along with performing, Murley has taught, holding positions at the University of Toronto, York University, Humber College, and the Banff School of Fine Arts.
