Marci

As Marci, TOPS keyboardist Marta Cikojevic constructs an affectionate, quirky indie pop informed by '80s pop and smooth R&B. Collaborators on her 2022 eponymous debut album include members of TOPS. As a child, Canada's Marta Cikojevic studied piano, performed in her church choir, and often sang along with the radio. In private, she delivered made-up songs into a handhold recorder, something she learned from her grandfather, who would sing both original tunes and traditional Croatian folk songs from his native Yugoslavia into a dictation tape machine. As an adult, Cikojevic made her way to Toronto, where she played in several bands before joining Montreal-based indie mainstay TOPS in 2017, just in time for a tour of Europe. The band's fourth album, I Feel Alive, was produced by bandmembers Jane Penny (vocalist/songwriter) and David Carriere (guitarist/songwriter) and released in 2020. TOPS were forced to cancel most of their ensuing tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic. By that point, Cikojevic had already begun working with Carriere on material for a solo debut. With a mutual goal of writing songs that were emotionally sincere as well as catchy and danceable, they wrote Marci's first songs on a Rhodes piano and bass guitar, later adding components such as analog and FM synths, samplers, guitars, and harmonies with help from Penny, Mitch Davis, Braids' Austin Tufts, Better Person's Adam Byczkowski, and Anemone's Chloé Soldevila, among others. The completed Marci LP arrived on Arbutus Records in August 2022.
