Kungsbacka Piano Trio

The Kungsbacka Piano Trio is one of Scandinavia's leading chamber ensembles, active in Britain and the U.S. as well as its home region. The group has recorded for the Naxos and BIS labels. The Kungsbacka Piano Trio was formed in 1997, taking its name from the town of Kungsbacka, near Gothenburg, Sweden, where it gave its first performance. Since the trio's inception, its members have been violinist Malin Broman, cellist Jesper Svedberg, and pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips. An early breakthrough for the trio was a first prize at Australia's Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 1999. That propelled the young group to membership in the Young Classical Artists Trust and BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme. The trio was also selected as one of the rising stars named by the European Concert Halls Organization, which brought, among other honors, a concert at New York's Carnegie Hall. The Kungsbacka Piano Trio was later given the Interpret Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2005, the trio made its recording debut on the BIS label on the album Arktis Arktis!: Works by Karen Rehnqvist. The Kungsbacka Piano Trio has performed widely around Europe, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand, touring Sweden repeatedly. It has appeared at Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin, among other world-class halls. Festival appearances include those at the Lockenhaus Festival in Austria, the BBC Proms in London, and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany. The Kungsbacka Piano Trio strongly champions contemporary music, having commissioned new works from such composers as Daniel Bortz, Helen Grime, and Mark-Anthony Turnage, as well as Rehnqvist. After more recordings for Naxos, including several devoted to Haydn's trios, the group moved to the BIS label, recording a pair of albums of Schumann chamber works in 2020 and 2023. The group members teach at Gothenburg University in Sweden and serve as an associate ensemble at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
