Kowloon Walled City

Part of the new wave of noise rock (Neurosis, Thou, YOB, Sleep) Oakland's Kowloon Walled City take the sound pioneered by bands like the Jesus Lizard and Unsane and push it into new dimensions of heaviness. With a style based around detuned, impossibly thick guitars and a bottomless well of anger, their crushing sound combines elements of math rock, sludge, and doom metal. Since debuting in 2008, the band has issued a string of inventive and acclaimed efforts that include Gambling on the Richter Scale (2009), Container Ships (2012), Grievances (2015), and Piecework (2021). Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Scott Evans, bassist Ian Miller, drummer Dan Sneddon, and guitarist Jon Howell, Kowloon Walled City made their debut in 2008 with the EP Turk Street, following up in 2009 with their first long-player, Gambling on the Richter Scale. In 2010, they contributed a pair of tracks to Lose Lose Lose, a three-way split with Fight Amp and Ladder Devils. 2012 saw the release of their second full-length effort, the urgent and engaging Container Ships, which was released by Brutal Panda. The following year saw them team up with Batillus for a cover of Godflesh's "Anthem." Their third LP, Grievances, arrived in 2015 and marked the group's first outing for Neurot Records. Six years later, they returned with the slow-burning Piecework, which featured more concise, though no less heavy songs inspired by themes of family, loss, and resilience.
