King Cannibal
King Cannibal, the name South London-based producer Dylan Richards takes for his dubstep-ragga-drum'n'bass-and-techno-dub mashing DJ, first starting getting attention on the dancefloor after the release of the 2008 12" "Arigami Style" b/w "Flower of Flesh and Blood" on Ninja Tune. Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs was an early fan, as well as tastemakers like Strictly Kev and Amon Tobin. Richards, however, was no stranger to the London club scene. An art school dropout, he began making mixes in the late '90s under the name DJ Zilla, including One Foot in the Fire, One Fist in the Air, and A Friendly Game of Chess, the latter with friend and Lex Records' DJ Buddy Peace. It was Zilla and Peace who Warp Records tapped to help with their label's 2004 retrospect, which, also thanks to the accompanying tour, gave the duo a much bigger presence. Richards soon began remixing for other artists, including Test Icicles, among others, and in 2006 began work on producing an EP for Kid606's Shockout label. This EP soon became two EPs, and King Cannibal was born. After signing to Ninja Tune in 2008 and releasing the 12", Richards released his debut full-length under the name King Cannibal, Let the Night Roar (a title taken from a quote from Jim Jones, of the Jonestown Massacre) in October 2009.
