Graig Markel
b. Greg Markel, USA. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Markel forges an impressive fusion of indie pop, lo-fi funk and neo-soul. Originating from Seattle, Washington, USA, Markel’s music career got underway in 1993, with the release of an EP, Bloodcake, and a single, ‘Crash Pansy’. Instead of issuing further solo releases straight away, Markel (aka Graig L. Shock around this time) opted to join forces with his bass playing brother, Nicholas Markel, and formed the indie rock outfit New Sweet Breath. The band went on to issue several releases (including 1995’s Supersound Speedway and 1996’s Demolition Theater) for the indie Ringing Ear label during the mid-to late 90s before splitting up. Markel then returned to his solo career, issuing critically acclaimed albums such as 1999’s Versus On Venus and 2001’s Hard Grammar. Markel also serves as half of experimental duo, Tagging Satellites, with Zera Marvel.
