Chris Shiflett
Although he is most widely known as the guitarist for alt-rock heroes Foo Fighters, Chris Shiflett has played a prominent role in various Southern California punk and indie acts while also releasing music under his own name. Early on, Shiflett earned a reputation as a reliable sideman, playing in bands like No Use for a Name and Me First & the Gimme Gimmes before joining Foo Fighters at the end of the '90s. He later launched a concurrent career as a frontman, first with a pair of country-inspired albums leading Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants, and then with his solo debut, 2017's West Coast Town. While juggling his commitments as a Foo Fighter, he continued to explore his own rock, punk, and country aspects on solo releases as 2019's Hard Lessons and 2023's Lost at Sea.
A native of Santa Barbara, California, Shiflett began his career with the glam punk outfit Lost Kittenz, which featured Steve Sherlock (who would go on to form Nerf Herder) and Marko DeSantis (of Sugarcult fame). In 1995, he joined No Use for a Name, playing guitar as a part of their rotating lineup until 1999’s More Betterness!. Around the same time, Shiflett was also recruited by Swingin' Utters singer Spike Slawson to play guitar for the punk supergroup and cover band extraordinaire Me First & the Gimme Gimmes. In 1999, Shiflett left No Use for a Name to take over guitar duties for Foo Fighters, replacing short-lived guitarist Franz Stahl (who had previously replaced the Germs' Pat Smear). He made his album debut with the band on 2002's One by One and became a permanent member soon after.
As an outlet for his own songwriting, Shiflett has also created a number of side projects. In 2003, he formed the punk band Jackson United with his brother Scott Shiflett and Pete Parada (both of Face to Face). After recording two albums with Jackson United, Shiflett began to explore influences beyond the punk world. In 2010, he released his first album under his own name, the country-influenced Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants on Le Coq Napoleon. Three years later, Shiflett & the Dead Peasants returned with All Hat and No Cattle, an album that pushed the band into hardcore '60s honky tonk territory. Dropping the Dead Peasants name, he made his proper solo debut with 2017's West Coast Town, a California-indebted album that mixed riffy rock with Bakersfield country. Shiflett followed it in 2019 with his second album, Hard Lessons, another Americana-leaning record with plenty of rock punch.
Each of these solo projects was made while maintaining his primary role with Foo Fighters, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. After the band's 11th album, But Here We Are, Shiflett returned to solo work with 2023's Lost at Sea.
