Bobby Blue

b. Everette Ellis, 1964, Savannah-Le-Mar, Jamaica, West Indies. Ellis nurtured his voice singing in his school choir and at Sunday school. His school concerts led to performances on Jamaica’s north coast, which provided a regular income and allowed him to perfect his own style. Appearances alongside Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor and Ninjaman led the singer to Kingston, where he recorded his debut, ‘Peace In The East’, a comment on the Gulf War, at Tuff Gong for the Ghetto Youths United subsidiary. The single led to further recordings, including the popular ‘I’m Vexed’, ‘Jah Is My Guiding Light’ and ‘Take Away My Woman’. He enjoyed international notoriety when he released ‘Religion Is Personal’, which featured alongside his earlier hits on his debut album, Of A Faith. His success prompted recording sessions with Donovan Germain, Mikey Spice, Culture Black and the rising producer Devon D. His subsequent celebrity status within reggae circles in Jamaica, the USA and UK led Blue to London to promote his debut album, which proved a commercial success for the Palmer Brothers when released through their Jet Star label. Ellis then embarked on sessions for the Big House Crew and Jet Star’s Charm subsidiary. ‘Ragamuffin Soldier’ demonstrated his versatility and provisionally lent its title to his projected second album.
