Aga Zaryan
Born Agnieszka Skrzypek in Warsaw, Poland on January 17, 1976, the Polish jazz vocalist is better known by her stage name Aga Zaryan. She was the first Polish musician to sign with Blue Note Records. Zaryan’s father was a classical pianist and she spent her early years traveling throughout Europe, spending her primary school years in Manchester, England. In her teens, after hearing the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, she turned her attention from tennis to become a jazz vocalist. She attended the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, studying voice and enrolling in the Jazz Studies program. She graduated with honors and was awarded scholarships to the U.S.-based Stanford Jazz Workshop and Jazz Camp West. She released her first album, My Lullaby, in 2002. After touring festivals and clubs for the next few years, she released her second album, Picking Up the Pieces, in 2006. Her third album, Umiera piękno (2007), was her first entirely in Polish. She signed with Blue Note Records and released her fourth album, Looking Walking Being, in 2010. Zaryan’s next two albums – A Book of Luminous Things (2011) and Księga olśnień (2011) – were also on Blue Note. She has continued to tour and record, releasing two albums in 2018: High & Low and What Xmas Means to Me.
