Présenté comme la nouvelle merveille du rock en cuir venu d'outre-Manche, The Vaccines a défrayé la chronique par la foi d'une seule demo diffusée par Zane Lowe, « If You Wanna ». Le quatuor mixte a ensuite confirmé, de concerts bluffants en singles ébouriffants, et raflé la pôle position sur la ligne de départ des sensations de l'année 2011.
Un titre envieux qu'il fallait transformer sur ce très attendu premier album, composé d'une douzaine d'hymnes allant d'une minute vingt-cinq à cinq minutes trente. Indubitablement, What Did You Expect from The Vaccines? a sous le pied des titres emblématiques, de ceux qui font l'histoire (« A Lack of Understanding »), et quelques fulgurances qui font les disques de palmarès (« Blow It Up », « Post Break-Up Sex »), ainsi qu'une poignée d'hymnes adolescents qui font le bonheur des baladeurs (« Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra) »).
Mais au bout de cette course folle à la chanson saturée parfaite, de ces murs de guitares dressés comme des piques coupantes, émerge un arrière-goût d'inachevé, voire pis : une formule tuée dans l'oeuf par trop de geste et un manque d'idées. N'est pas The Jesus and Mary Chain qui veut, et malgré d'incontestables accès de fièvre, The Vaccines n'infuse pas le sérum tant attendu.
