Le trompettiste Terence Blanchard ne fait pas dans la demie mesure : « Kendrick Scott est devenu le Art Blakey, le Elvin Jones, le Tony Williams de sa génération ! ». Bon… De quoi attirer en tout cas celles et ceux qui ne connaitraient pas encore ce batteur de 35 ans qui publie ici son premier album pour le label Blue Note, We Are The Drum. Belle étoile montante de la batterie (même si les comparaisons avec le triumvirat magique Blakey/Elvin/Tony est un chouia excessive…), le Texan baigne dans la musique depuis le berceau. Au milieu des années 2000, ce diplômé du Berklee College de Boston se fait rapidement un nom en enclumant aux côtés des Jazz Crusaders, Pat Metheny, Kenny Garrett, Joe Lovano, Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright et bien entendu Terence Blanchard qui en fait un de ses fidèles complices. En 2006, The Source, premier album de son groupe Kendrick Scott Oracle, avait déjà mis le doigt sur ce réel talent de la scène jazz contemporaine. Entouré d’Aaron Parks, Robert Glasper, Seamus Blake, Walter Smith III, Myron Walden, Mike Moreno, Lionel Loueke, Lage Lund, Derrick Hodge et Gretchen Parlato, Scott s’affirmait en vrai leader. Avec The Reverence en 2010 et Conviction en 2013, son talent se confirme. Publié en octobre 2015, We Are The Drum marque une nouvelle étape dans son ascension. Avec Taylor Eigsti (piano et Rhodes), Michael Moreno (guitare), John Ellis (saxophone et clarinette basse), Joe Sanders (basse) et, sur un titre, Lizz Wright (chant), il a déjà l’intelligence de ne jamais concentrer voire attirer exclusivement l’attention sur son instrument de prédilection. En cela, We Are The Drum n’est pas un disque de batteur. Chaque intervenant est à l’écoute des autres et c’est cette cohésion générale qui impressionne. © CM/Qobuz
