Les années 1970 dans le monde occidental furent celles de l’ouverture à l’Orient et à tout un mysticisme de bazar qui n’épargna guère la musique. C’était l’époque des voyages à Katmandou, des hippies et auto-stoppeurs de toutes sorte allant accomplir leur karma en Inde, au son de Ravi Shankar et des musiques planantes comme celles du Mahavishnu Orchestra. Visions of Emerald Beyond représente la quintessence de toute la symbolique orientale traditionnellement associée à John McLaughlin et sa bande. Certes, il ne s’agit guère de morceaux de cithares sur lesquels un quelconque Demis Roussos poserait sa voix, car la formation reste fidèle à son genre de prédilection. Cependant, l’influence « planante » des musiques de l’époque est omniprésente dans tout l’album, d’« Eternity Breath » à « Earth Ship ». Peut-être l’album le plus « baba-cool » de toute la carrière du groupe.
