C'est un euphémisme d'affirmer que British Sea Power n'est pas le groupe anglais le plus en vogue de ce côté-ci de la Manche, et qu'il existe peu de chances pour qu'il remplisse un jour le Stade de France. Cette considération pesée, il faut remarquer que le quintette de Brighton, parvenu au quatrième album (sans compter la bande originale de Man of Aran et de multiples EP's) a su tenir le cap et se renouveler, sans sombrer dans les fonds de classement ni faire fuir les fans de la première heure.
A l'heure de Valhalla Dancehall au titre hâbleur, il faut avouer que malgré tout le bien qu'on peut en penser, BSP a perdu de sa superbe depuis Do You Like Rock Music?. Les riffs bien sentis de « We Are Sound », les envolées à la Jarvis Cocker et les références historiques ou politique-fiction (« Georgie Ray » d'après Orwell et Bradbury) ne peuvent se substituer aux trésors d'imagination et renversement de tendances déployés dans The Decline of British Sea Power ou Open Season.
Fort heureusement, quelques belles éruptions épiques font plus que compenser les premières impressions. Le tir en rafale de « Stunde Null », « Mongk II » et du single « Observe The Skies » redonne des couleurs au stadium rock de BSP, désormais teinté de touches electro, tandis que « Baby » ou « Cleaning Out The Rooms » gambadent dans la verte vallée de l'île de Skye où l'album a été conçu. Ce Valhalla Dancehall n'est pas encore l'heure de sonner l'halali.
