Ex-chanteuse des orfèvres pop Belle And Sebastian et occasionnelle complice de Mark Lanegan (trois albums magnifiques dans l’esprit Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood), Isobel Campbell a toujours gardé du temps pour sa carrière solo sous son nom ou celui de The Gentle Waves. Enregistré en 2014, There Is No Other… sera resté six longues années dans les placards pour d’obscures raisons contractuelles. C’est surtout le premier vrai disque de l’Ecossaise depuis quatorze ans. Et quel disque ! Avant tout, Isobel Campbell a toujours été UNE voix. Un cristal d’une pureté rare dont elle n’a jamais abusé gratuitement. Cet organe, elle l’habille ici d’une pop folk héritée de la scène californienne 70's de Laurel Canyon (Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Mamas & The Papas, David Crosby) comme sur The National Bird of India et l’onirique City of Angels qui fleurent bon l’été indien. Compréhensible vu que la Glaswégienne a vécu plusieurs années dans la Cité des Anges. Le revival folk britannique de la fin des 60's (Pentangle, Fairport Convention) semble aussi l’avoir marquée. Mais la force de There Is No Other… est surtout d’agréger toutes ces époques, toutes ces musiques très codifiées pour se les approprier et en faire une BO aussi sensuelle que cinématographique sculptée par un vibraphone ici, quelques cordes là et une guitare baryton un peu plus loin.
