Pour célébrer le 40e anniversaire de la sortie de leur premier album, Sony Music CG a réuni tous les singles de Wham! dans un disque agrémenté de nombreux bonus. Celui-ci ne pouvait débuter que par Wham Rap ! (Enjoy What You Do), carte de visite cuivrée et bondissante de ce duo constitué de George Michael et Andrew Ridgeley. Le morceau original est suivi de cinq versions différentes qui raviront les fans. On appréciera notamment le Special US Remix et ses claquements de mains faisant monter le curseur d’une rythmique originale déjà efficace. Suit Young Guns (Go for It), à partir duquel Wham! deviendra un véritable phénomène de société. Décontractés, élégants et gentiment anti-conformistes, les deux jeunes gens enchaîneront ensuite les succès : Bad Boys et son inoubliable gimmick introductif au synthé, le rafraîchissant et estival Club Tropicana, ou encore l’incontournable Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, single de 1984 qui semble tout droit sorti du catalogue de la Motown.
Le nombre de tubes présentés dans cette compilation est d’autant plus impressionnant que Wham! a eu une durée de vie relativement courte, avant le succès phénoménal de George Michael en solo. Un morceau comme Last Christmas reflète d’ailleurs la mutation de George Michael : il est certes signé des deux membres de Wham! mais c’est Michael qui semble le porter seul sur ses épaules. Cette bluette à la montagne est présentée ici dans sa version originale, accompagnée d’un Pudding Mix dans lequel un synthé bell vient renforcer l’aspect noëlesque de cette ballade mythique. Le disque étant structuré de manière chronologique, il se termine par les singles les moins emblématiques de la formation : The Edge of Heaven, Battlestations, ainsi que Where Did Your Heart Go ?, une reprise du groupe américain Was (Not Was) chantée par Michael et sur laquelle Ridgeley est tout simplement absent. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
