Déjà reconnu comme l’un des plus grands auteurs compositeurs américains de sa génération après trois albums à son actif en deux ans, Jackson Browne prend plus de temps pour l’enregistrement du quatrième, produit cette fois par le journaliste et éminence grise de Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, qui rend ici beaucoup mieux justice à la voix de son client qu’auparavant. Bien que la plupart des chansons aient été écrites avant le suicide de sa femme survenu huit mois plus tôt, ce disque est parfois émouvant et figure derrière ses meilleurs.
Enregistré avec plus d’une trentaine de musiciens et chanteurs typiques du « rock californien » (dénommé parfois aux Etats-Unis « le circuit Tequila » !) dont trois membres de Little Feat, ses mélodies sont plus immédiates et les textes toujours aussi percutants, notamment le titre final sarcastique, « The Pretender ». Quant à au curieux morceau « Daddy’s Tune » avec ses arrangements parodiques de cuivres, sa mélodie délicate, écrite sans doute à l’attention de son fils Ethan qu’il emmène en tournée ensuite dans le bus, il est curieusement absent des « best of » consacrés à l’artiste, alors qu’il fût inclus et donna son titre à une compilation hors commerce en France.
L'album parvint n°4 au Billboard et s'est vendu à plus de trois millions d'exemplaires aux Etats-Unis.
