Produit par Jim Abiss (qui est également derrière le succès de Kasabian), The Back Room ramène à une certaine idée du rock tel qu’on le concevait en Grande-Bretagne vers le début des années 1980 : guitares mélodieuses (volontiers appuyées par des sons de synthétiseur) et voix d’androïde à peine humanisé, le tout sur une rythmique glaciale et imperturbable, presque métronomique. Une recette qui a fait ses preuves du côté de Manchester, notamment.
Le groupe affectionne les morceaux dynamiques (« Bullets ») et dansants, comme le très efficace « Fingers in the Factories », mais il peut aussi se faire plaintif sans être geignard (sur les ballades « Fall » ou « Camera ») et introspectif, comme sur le remarquable « All Sparks ». Mais « all sparks will burn out in the end », peut-être, aussi. Puisse l’étoile d'Editors briller plus longtemps que bien de ces étincelles qui ne donnèrent que des feux de paille.
