La pandémie, le confinement et la distanciation physique sont le point de départ et d’arrivée de cet album de piano solo que Brad Mehldau n’avait évidemment pas prévu d’enregistrer ni de publier. L’impact de cette situation des plus lunaire va jusque dans les titres des compositions de Suite: April 2020 (waking up, stepping outside, keeping distance, stopping, listening: hearing, remembering before all this, uncertainty, the day moves by…) et même dans la pochette du disque, un texte de sa main, comme la feuille de route explicative d’un exercice finalement plus passionnant que minant. Passionnant jusque dans son piano, plus épuré qu’à l’accoutumée. Comme si chaque note soupesée s’interrogeait elle aussi sur sa propre raison d’être. Une ambiance qui donne aux improvisations de Mehldau une simplicité inédite, une virginité surréaliste. Simplicité sans doute de s’être retrouvé, comme jamais, en famille dans les tâches et les plaisirs basiques du quotidien, comme il l’écrit sur la pochette. Et de conclure cette parenthèse aux allures de promenade intérieure par trois reprises : Don’t Let It Bring You Down de Neil Young, une chanson qui lui a régulièrement servi de canne blanche, New York State of Mind de Billy Joel, lettre d’amour à cette Grosse Pomme qui a grandement souffert pendant l’épidémie, et qu’il considère comme sa maison bien qu’il ne l’habite plus, et le standard Look for the Silver Lining, qui referme de manière rassurante, chaleureuse et pleine d’espoir cette séquence durant laquelle la planète s’arrêta de tourner ; ou presque. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
