Phil Thornton is well known for his work with Sinead O'Connor, as well as his own explorations of Celtic music, electronica, New Age ambience, tribal rhythms, and the musical traditions of non-Western cultures. SOLSTICE draws on Thornton's Celtic interest, merging old and new sounds for what might be a soundtrack to a festival (the album's title and sound evokes images of Pagans dancing around a fire in the woods, celebrating the turning of the seasons). The instrumentation here is particularly notable, as hand drums, recorders and flagolet are played alongside analog synthesizers, electric guitars, and fretless bass, creating a time warp that makes SOLSTICE sound both timeless and contemporary. This compulsively rhythmic Celtic-flavored music should appeal to fans of Thornton's other work, and win some new ones as well.
