Double album, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence est d’autant plus bicéphale qu’il représente à lui seul la dichotomie d’un groupe qui peine encore à chercher un style qui lui soit propre.
Ainsi, si le premier disque s’inscrit dans un esprit metal progressif avec, notamment un découpage presque digne d’un opéra (sur les titres « The Glass Prison », « Reflection », « Restoration » ou « Revelation ») ainsi que quelques ballades n’ayant pas grand chose à voir avec le hard rock ; le second disque, quant à lui, s’inspire clairement d’un heavy metal plutôt lourd, faisant la part belle aux riffs enragés et aux prestations vocales flirtant parfois avec le hurlement déchaîné.
Construit autour de l’idée de la maladie mentale et des addictions humaines, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence se veut une relecture post-moderne de l’Enfer de Dante. S’il n’a pas convaincu les fans, car peut-être trop déroutant, l’album n’en reste pas moins l’une des plus belles compostions de Dream Theater à ce jour.
