Après un premier album en 1989 sur lequel Charlie Dominici était venu poser sa voix, Dream Theater avait mis plus d’un an avant de trouver un nouveau chanteur correspondant aux exigences progressives du groupe. Kevin James LaBrie est finalement sélectionné pour les besoins d’ Images and Words, le premier album du groupe qui peut s’offrir une promotion sur MTV.
Plus gros succès de Dream Theater à ce jour, l’abum fut porté par le single « Pull Me Under » qui contribua à en faire un hit. Oscillant entre le heavy metal bien pêchu et bien lourd et le metal progressif plus léger, Images And Words s’éloigne du style de composition de When Dream and Day Unite en ce qu’il est composé de morceaux courts, non délayés sur plusieurs plages comme c’était le cas auparavant dans les titres écrits par Myung.
S’il n’est pas « l’album de la maturité », selon la formule consacrée, il n’en reste pas moins une pièce maîtresse dans la carrière de Dream Theater. L’album par lequel le succès est venu quand bien même des perfectionnistes composant la bande n’en furent pas totalement satisfaits.
