Ryn Weaver appeared seemingly overnight in June of 2014 with the online release of her "OctaHate" single. The song was a booming, brilliantly produced slice of electropop with indie leanings, helped in no small part from collaborations in production and co-writing from Charli XCX, Passion Pit singer Michael Angelakos, and big-name producer Benny Blanco. These famous friends stirred speculation as to whether Weaver was really an unknown talent or the creation of a major label simply being pushed on the public as an authentically indie success story. Regardless of if Weaver's rise to fame was a calculated move or not, debut EP Promises offers up four tracks of brilliantly produced catchy pop somewhere between quirky indie and radio-ready singles that would sound great in the hands of any major-label pop star. "OctaHate" stands out among the rest, though the title track holds its own as well.
